Fr Peter Phiri sends news from his parish in Malawi. Many St. Alban’s and St. Hugh’s parishioners will know Fr Peter as over the last few years he has worked in our parishes during some summers to give our own priests a well-earned break.

The parish of St. Peter and St. Paul is located in Chilobwe Township which is in Malawi’s commercial city of Blantyre.  St Peter and St. Paul was established in 1975 as a sub parish of St. Pius.  The parish was only created in its own right in September 2012.  During the celebrations His Grace Archbishop Tarcizio Ziyaye commended the parishioners for working together to find a house for the priest and furnish it.  The parish has a catholic population of 13,000.

Fr Peter sent a couple of pictures of the Christmas 2012 celebrations in his parish.

The Holy Week and the Easter celebrations in Chilobwe as in every Catholic Parish represent the highlight of year.  From the Palm Sunday processions moving through the passover meal, to the passion and crucifixion of Christ.  The celebrations were well attended by the catholic community.  The Way of the Cross procession was over one kilometer long and took three hours to commemorate.
